#editortips for 07.13.12
@smoulderingsea: First instinct after subbing may be to find the agent/editor on Twitter, laugh at all their jokes, and hump their leg. Don't. #editortips
@smoulderingsea: Yes, you can annoy someone into rejecting you. Publishing industry professionals look for people they can work well with. #editortips
@smoulderingsea: If your agent sends emails full of typos & other mistakes, you may want to reevaluate their ability to discern quality fiction. #editortips**
@smoulderingsea: Don't be afraid to research an agent's clients. Get a feel for the people they work with, and their books. Just don't stalk. #editortips
@smoulderingsea: Never submit with the expectation that agents/editors will teach you how to write. You create a quality product. We fine-tune. #editortips
@smoulderingsea: Don't wait until after you have a book contract to create your online presence. Establish yourself. Build a community. Be known. #editortips
@smoulderingsea: Write as if in freefall and will never hit bottom--but edit without a net, and remember every word could tip you over the edge. #editortips
@smoulderingsea: Before you self-publish, understand the work required to create a quality product. It's not just about uploading to Amazon. #editortips
@smoulderingsea: Not all readers are writers, so don't think writers are the only ones who get what you do. Branch out in your personal network. #editortips
@smoulderingsea: Your query should be written to sell, but make sure it sells what's in your book. Don't bait and switch to get a request. #editortips
@smoulderingsea: Some act like publishing is high school redux, and it's a popularity contest. It's not. Don't let anyone intimidate you. #editortips
**@LauraRenegar added, "I received a response from a partial that was a mess. Choppy cutting & pasting. Didn't know the diff. between to, two, & 2. I made a note on my file that she would never rep me."
About #editortips:
#editortips is a daily rash of tweets from an only partially crazy editor, chock full of random chocolatey morsels about writing, editing, and querying vaguely disguised as helpful pointers and/or really bad humor. I tweet as @smoulderingsea, and try to post with some consistency every weekday at 6PM CST. Weekends optional, depending on if I’m spending yet another Saturday night editing because my social life consists of Netflix and putting out fires with gasoline.
